At the end of the 1970s, the US Army wanted a new transport vehicle. Lamborghini was the first manufacturer to draw with the Cheetah. At this point AM General offered its M 998. It was the latter that was chosen by the Army. The legend of the "Humvee" (High mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle - HMMWV) was born. In 1989, the Humvee had its baptism of fire in Panama. 30 years later, it is still in use around the world. AM General M1115 HMMWV In 1981 the US government awarded AM General the contract for 55,000 HMMWVs. This High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) has assumed the military role previously filled by Jeep and is produced in several configurations: command and control systems, field ambulance, ammunition and troop and general cargo transport. Optional equipment includes a winch and supplemental armor. Variant armament carriers provide mounting and firing capabilities for heavy machine guns. The Humvee is equipped with a high performance diesel engine, automatic transmission and four wheel drive and is air transportable and droppable from a variety of aircraft.
