TIN TOYS: 1945-1975 by Michael Buhler, (this edition by) Mandarin
Publishers, Hong Kong, 1978.
This early out-of-print book is a pictorial guide to vintage tin toys produced
between 1945-1975.
After the Second World War, the US Zone of Occupation included Nuremburg, the
site of several toy factories. American companies contracted with these early
German toy makers to produce wares for American toy markets. This book tells
the story of the Americanization of some aspects of European and Japanese
cultures through the toy-making industries with American children in mind.
This beautifully illustrated book—all in vivid color—shows cars, trams,
airplanes, trains, police motorcycles, trucks and accessories. Pictured and
described are toys from Japan, U.K., USA, West Germany, Spain, India and other
countries. The collection is mainly comprised to what used to be thought of a
toys for boys,” but also includes clowns and other figures. It traces the
increasing mechanization of toys and the growing sophistication of toys made
possible by innovations such as battery operation and radio-control.
Authoritatively and enthusiastically presented, this text will make an
essential addition to the reference library of toy collectors and aficionados
everywhere.
