On April 23, 1500 Pedro Alvares Cabral and his fleet of a dozen ships landed
at a bay he called "Porto Seguro". Today, he is generally accepted as the
discoverer of Brazil. Two years ago, the entire country celebrated the fith
centennial of this important dat. This MD-11 of the Brazilian arline VASP
received a sail with the number 500 near the cockpit in the year 2000.
VASP (Viação Aérea São Paulo) was an airline based in São Paulo, Brazil. It
was the second largest scheduled airline in Brazil. It had main bases at
Congonhas Domestic Airport (CGH) and Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), São
Paulo. History. The airline was established on November 4, 1933by the
government of Sao Pauloand started operations in 1933. VASP was the first
airline to serve the interior of the state of São Paulo. At the start of the
1930s, it was the only carrier to operate with land planes. At the time this
was a real exploit due to the lack of adequate non-coastal airports. Many
landing strips were improvised in flat pastures. This insistence on using only
land planes led to the building in 1936 of one of the country’s most important
airports, Congonhas, located in the city of São Paulo, far from the coast. VASP
was privatized in 1990. A majority stake was bought by the VOE/Canhedo Group, a
company formed by the Canhedo Group of Brasilia and VASP employees. Under the
command of its new owner and president, Wagner Canhedo, quickly expanded
operations in the country, and created international routes, being the second
Brazilian company to do so after 1965. In 2002, it interrupted all of its
international operations to concentrate in the domestic market. By this time,
VASP was the fourth largest airline in Brazil, using an old fleet of Boeing
737sand Airbus A300. The company faced its worst crisis 2004, which led to the
suspension of service to some Brazilian cities and the cancellation of flights.
As a result, VASP - once a proud, competitive airline - had its domestic market
share reduced to only 10%. On 27 January2005, Brazil's civil aviation
regulator, DAC, grounded the airline from operating scheduled services pending
a financial investigation. VASP was allowed to operate charter services until
April 2005, giving it a chance to prove its financial stability in order to
retain its air operators certificate. As of July 2007, VASP is no longer
flying. The company's only activity is providing maintenance services to other
airlines. It has been operating under the new Brazilian bankruptcy law since
July 2006, and had its recovery plan approved in 27 August2006. VASP is
planning to fly again in the latter part of 2007.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a three-engine medium- to long-range widebody
jet airliner, manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and, later, by Boeing
Commercial Airplanes. Based on the DC-10, it features a stretched fuselage,
increased wingspan with winglets, refined airfoils on the wing and smaller
tailplane, new engines and increased use of composite materials. Two of its
engines are mounted on underwing pylons and a third engine at the base of the
vertical stabilizer. It also features an all-digital glass cockpit that
decreases the flight deck crew from the three required on the DC-10 to two by
eliminating the necessity for a flight engineer. The MD-11 is a medium to
long-range widebody airliner, with two engines mounted on underwing pylons and
a third engine at the base of the vertical stabilizer. It is based on the
DC-10, but featuring a stretched fuselage, increased wingspan with winglets,
refined aerofoils on the wing and tailplane, new engines and increased use of
composites. The winglets are credited with improving fuel efficiency by about
2.5%. The MD-11 has a smaller empennage than the DC-10 it is based upon. The
MD-11 features a two-crew cockpit that incorporates six interchangeable
CRT-units and advanced Honeywell VIA 2000 computers. The cockpit design is
called Advanced Common Flightdeck (ACF) and is shared with the Boeing 717.
Flight deck features include an Electronic Instrument System, a dual Flight
Management System, a Central Fault Display System, and Global Positioning
System. Category IIIb automatic landing capability for bad-weather operations
and Future Air Navigation Systems are available.
